Sarah Michelle Gellar is making a return to supernatural TV on the Paramount+ series Wolf Pack, revealing what made her return to genre series after her run on the pop-cultural phenomenon Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

During a chat with Den of Geek, Gellar is asked what drew her to the new series and brought an end to her hiatus from starring in television shows. The Buffy actress expressed that she wasn't against returning, but it had to be for something just as good or better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "It was a couple of things. I’ve said this before, but initially, I had no intention of saying 'yes' [to it]. It’s really hard when you’ve done something like Buffy," Gellar explained. "Because it’s not that I’ve avoided genre, it’s just that I can’t top that. So it has to be either something that’s so different or equally good, or all of those things have to sort of come together. I love genre, but it has to fit."

Developed by Jeff Davis, Wolf Pack is based on the 2004 book of the same name by writer Edo van Belkom. In the series, a teenage boy and girl find their lives completely changed when a California wildfire awakens a supernatural creature. Soon the full moon rises and a group of young adults bands together to unravel the secret that unites them.

Davis also developed the supernatural take on Teen Wolf for MTV and Gellar said that he was another factor that made her want to do the series. "So I read [the script] and was like, 'Oh gosh, it’s really good.' And I’d heard such amazing things about Jeff Davis over time," Gellar recalled. "The way he spoke about the show he wanted to make and the audience he wanted to go after and the things I would get the opportunity to do, both behind the scenes and in front [of the camera], it really just was one of those opportunities that I couldn’t pass up."

Gellar became a household name when she starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, created by writer and director Joss Whedon. Based on the 1992 film of the same name, the series followed Buffy Summers (Gellar), the latest in a line of young women known as "Slayers." These warriors are chosen by fate to battle against supernatural forces but Buffy wants to lead a normal life that conflicts with her destiny.

Running for seven seasons and 144 episodes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer received both popular and critical acclaim during its run, and Gellar was acknowledged for work on the series when she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Television Series Drama in 2001.

Wolf Pack begins streaming on Paramount+ on Jan. 26, 2023.
