Surprising virtually no one, Attack on Titan emerged as the top media property this year in Japan, selling about $60.5 million in manga, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, CDs and novels.
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, a perennial favorite, followed closely without about $59.6 million.
The list, compiled by Japanese market research firm Oricon, doesn’t include sales of video games, movie tickets, digital downloads and other forms of media.
Although sales of Hajime Isayama’s fantasy manga have dropped dramatically in the past couple of years — 8.8 million copies in 2015, down about 50 percent from 2013 — Attack on Titan remains immensely popular, both in Japan and in North America. Fans reacted largely with disappointment to the two-live action films, but still eagerly await word about the second season of the hit anime series. The comedy spinoff Attack on Titan: Junior High concluded last week in Japan.
Attack on Titan and One Piece are followed on Oricon’s list by The Seven Deadly Sins, Love Live! and Kingdom. You can see the entire Top 10 at Anime News Network.
