Netflix is devoting a great deal of marketing attention to its big-budget series The Witcher. To whet fans’ appetites for what’s to come, it put on The Witcher Fan Experience on Tuesday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California. Despite rain and terrible traffic (this is L.A. we’re talking about), fans of the property came out in droves to take it all in.

The experience consisted of an immersive walk-through, a marketplace, and the crown jewel of the evening, a screening of the series’ first episode. The walk-through consisted of three rooms in which actors told tales that set up different parts of the series, providing a glimpse into the story the show will tell.

Meanwhile the marketplace set up adjacent to the walk-through featured a band, photo-ops, trivia and other experiences, all in the style of the world of The Witcher. One especially fun encounter consisted of a town bard serenading individual fans as if they were Witchers themselves. And if that weren’t enough, in the lobby of the Egyptian Theatre, Netflix set up a giant Kikimora, a spider-like monster, to haunt fans’ nightmares and photo libraries.

All in all, the event was a fun and inventive way to immerse fans into the world of The Witcher. Although the series has yet to be released, the experience made it clear just how many fans of the property exist already. The novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and the video game adaptations have a cult-like following, and if the attendants at the event are any indication, that existing fan base is thrilled that the story will be coming to life in Netflix's adaptation.

And those fans were not disappointed by what they saw at the premiere episode screening. Fan response was rapturous. That enthusiasm was already in full effect before the episode began, especially because to fans’ great delight, creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich provided an introduction to the series and invited several of the show’s actors onstage with her, including Freya Allan who plays Ciri, Anya Chalotra who plays Yennefer, and Henry Cavill who plays Geralt of Rivia.

Schmidt Hissrich spoke about the fans’ incredible passion for the series. She was clearly flattered by their response throughout the process of creating the show. She even mentioned she’d recently opened up a Reddit account to ensure she could have more interactions with fans, which she said were almost all positive so far. Schmidt Hissrich also emphasized the contributions of The Witcher writers who imagined the series to life, announcing each of their names individually, and praised the work of the cast and crew during a seven months-long shoot in a series of international locations.

To end the introduction she handed the microphone over to Cavill who told the excited crowd, “The hours of cold nights, hard work and all of it have come to this very moment where, certainly for me, I get to be living my dream by playing Geralt of Rivia.” He also gave a shout out to the hard work of his fellow cast members and Schmidt Hissrich. Then, to close out his comments, he sincerely remarked, “We just hope you absolutely love what we’ve done, because we loved doing it.”

The episode unspooled on the big screen, which demonstrated the series’ cinematic scope and quality. Netflix clearly has high hopes for the series, and based on the enthusiasm of the crowds at this event, The Witcher will be a winner.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. The series will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 20.
