CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a next-gen update for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 later this year. The announcement was made during CD Projekt Red's Group Strategy Update and subsequently tweeted by the company's public relations manager, Radek Grabowski. Those who already own the game on Xbox One, PS4 and PC will also get the next-gen upgrade at no additional cost.
Released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt centers on Geralt of Rivia and his search for his adopted daughter Ciri, who's being tracked down by the evil and supernatural Wild Hunt. It was preceded by The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings in 2011 and The Witcher in 2007, and all three games are inspired by the series of Witcher novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and take place after those events.
The Witcher 3 is largely regarded as the best game in the franchise, and many consider it one of the greatest RPGs in modern gaming. It even won Best RPG and the coveted top spot at 2015's Game of the Year Awards. Until The Last of Us Part II, The Witcher 3 was also the most-awarded video game of all time.
Following its initial release, The Witcher 3 debuted two similarly favorable expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. These were both included in 2016's Game of the Year edition.
