Netflix launched the trailer for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the Winx Club animated series, Fate: The Winx Saga, yesterday on YouTube. Fans of the Winx Club series have begun to point out that the series has whitewashed two of its most prominent characters.Much of the criticism revolves around the characters Musa and Flora, who are of Asian and Latinx heritage, respectively. Created by Iginio Straffi, Winx Club follows the adventures of a fairy named Bloom who enlists in Alfea College to hone her skills alongside her friends. The series ran in Italy from 2004-2009, and a revival series from Nickelodeon launched a revival that ran from 2011-2019.

Fate: The Winx Saga follows the coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence. From creator Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries), Fate: The Winx Saga is a live-action reimagining of the Italian cartoon Winx Club from Iginio Straffi.

Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey), Josh Cowdery (Legends), Alex Macqueen (Peaky Blinders) and Eva Birthistle (The Last Kingdom) also star. The series premieres Jan. 22, 2021 on Netflix.
