Willow co-showrunner Jonathan Kasdan commented on the departure of director Jon M. Chu from the production.

"Crushed to lose Jon M. Chu, who's enthusiasm has been a north star or us. Ironically, the qualities we love most about him — his heart, warmth, devotion — are exactly what now prevent him from joining us on this adventure. We admire you, brotha, and we will win this war for you!" Kasdan wrote on Twitter. The tweet was accompanied by an image from the original Willow movie of Airk (Gavan O'Herlihy) as he implores Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) to "win this war for me".

Jon M. Chu recently had to step down from his directorial duties on the pilot of Willow due to factors stemming from both the pandemic and his own personal life. "I'm heartbroken to let you all know that I unfortunately have to step away from directing Willow," Chu wrote in a social media post. "With the production schedule moving due to continued [coronavirus (COVID-19)] lockdowns in the UK, and with a new baby coming this summer (surprise!), the timing is just not going to work for me and my family."

The Willow sequel series on Disney+ will pick up many years after the original film and introduce "all-new characters to the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters," in addition to bringing Davis back as Willow. Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle will serve as showrunners, with Ron Howard, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan among the executive producers.

Disney+'s Willow stars Warwick Davis, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber and Cailee Spaeny. The series has yet to receive a premiere date.
