For Jon Kasdan, working with Disney and Lucasfilm is a family legacy. His father, writer/director Lawrence Kasdan, co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and penned the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The series was announced on Twitter in April of last year. Details so far include that it will be a direct continuation of the film and that it will involve Warwick Davis reprising the role of the titular Willow.

The original movie was directed by Ron Howard, written by George Lucas and Bob Dolman, and starred Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley and Jean Marsh. Unlike Lucasfilm's other franchises, Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Willow never had any follow-ups or spin-offs, aside from a 1989 video game adaptation developed by Capcom. There was also a sequel novel trilogy, Chronicles of the Shadow War, published from 1995 to 2000, which was written by Chris Claremont and George Lucas.

It is still unknown if other cast members aside from Warwick Davis will return or if the new series will incorporate any elements from Chronicles of the Shadow War.
