Disney+ isn’t dragging its heels when it comes to pushing forward with its biggest brands on the small screen. The announcement that Lucasfilm’s beloved classic Willow will continue its adventure on the platform represents a huge, long overdue win for fans. The streaming mixed-medium will perfectly balance movie quality on a smaller scale and budget. Along with Willow, one film franchise that should make its return is Indiana Jones.

With theaters having been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hollywood has needed to find ways to keep moving forward. At the same time, Indiana Jones 5 remains mired in production hell, as it's been in the works for several years but has not come to fruition. A television series could be a great way for the Indy franchise to return.

Harrison Ford has been clear that he wants to reprise his iconic role and he isn’t ready to give it up to someone else. However, Steven Spielberg has passed the director’s chair to the very capable and talented James Mangold. Even the now-retired George Lucas who co-created the character with Spielberg has stepped back entirely. Lucasfilm could easily keep using Harrison, despite the 78-year old’s limitations for hard stunts, using things like The Mandalorian’s new revolutionary production technology. Harrison could remain in the role as long as the actor is willing and the story demands it; however, there are alternatives.

The 1990’s TV-series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles features two versions of the Indy character at different ages during his youth. The older was played impressively by the Emmy-winning Sean Patrick Flanery. Flanery has the chops for action that the character would need and he retains a close resemblance to Harrison Ford even today, so Flanery could easily step into the role should Disney produce the series.

Despite the fact that Flanery could do the role justice, the Indy character is so iconic and intertwined with Harrison Ford that selling audiences on a reboot with a new actor is still a risky move. However, letting the Indiana Jones story continue on Disney+ in a soft reboot of sorts might be a better way to introduce a new superstar to properly take on the roll and make it their own.

Disney+ also gives the Indiana Jones franchise a chance to embrace the very heart of what makes the films so much fun: adventure. The platform would allow for shorter, stand-alone adventure stories within a larger, season-long story arc. It would let Indiana regain his swagger with some shameless, good time adventures with fewer restrictions, mimicking the same kind of serial stories the original character was based upon.

Willow and Indiana Jones are the only two signature non-Star Wars projects for Lucasfilm. With the excitement surrounding the Willow series, there is no reason why Indiana Jones can't be brought back as well.
