Former Star Trek star William Shatner has endorsed actor Johnathon Schaech's pitch for a DC's Legends of Tomorrow spinoff series centered around his character, Jonah Hex.Schaech pitched the potential spinoff to new DC Studios head James Gunn on Twitter, writing, "Dear [James Gunn], Before they shut down [verified,] Please consider me as #JonahHex in a spin-off series from [DC's Legends of Tomorrow] based off the #AllStarWestern comics. People would love that. Congrats on the new position. You deserve it!" The actor's tweet was subsequently shared by Shatner, whose own tweet was liked by Gunn.RELATED: Smallville's Welling and Durance Are Willing to Return to Their Arrowverse Superman Story

Created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, Jonah Hex first appeared in DC Comics' All-Star Western #10 in 1972. The character is typically depicted as a surly and cynical bounty hunter whose face is scarred on the right side. Despite his poor reputation and personality, Hex is bound by a personal code of honor to protect and avenge the innocent. Schaech made three appearances as the Arrowverse's Jonah Hex in Legends of Tomorrow. He also appeared in the Arrowverse crossover "Crisis on Infinite Earths".

The Arrowverse's Future Looks Bleak

Following the cancelations of DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman in April 2022, The Flash is currently the only remaining superhero series on The CW that is still set on the Arrowverse's Earth-Prime. Superman and Lois was initially believed to also take place on Earth-Prime but was later revealed to be set in its own universe. With the sudden cancelation of the Arrowverse-adjacent series Stargirl and an unsure future for Superman and Lois beyond its third season, The Flash's upcoming ninth and final season might very well mark the end of the long-running and well-established shared universe, which first began back in 2012 with the series premiere of Arrow.

Gunn, who was recently appointed co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios with producer Peter Safran, recently addressed fans' pleas for more Arrowverse content, writing on Twitter, "Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. [...] As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC." He added, "But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects."

At this time, Justice U is the only Arrowverse-adjacent project currently in development at DC and The CW. The Flash and Superman and Lois air their ninth and third seasons, respectively, in 2023.
