Will Tom Cruise Become The Man From U.N.C.L.E.?

Warners Bros. has been hard at work trying to bring the classic NBC spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to the big screen. First Steven Soderbergh was on board with star George Clooney, but eventually they both exited, leaving the project in limbo until Guy Ritchie hopped on. As of now, the film’s still star-less, but that might not be the case for long, Deadline reports.

According to the website, none other than Tom Cruise has begun talks to star. This is well-worn territory for the actor, who rejuvenated fellow ’60s spy show Mission: Impossible in 1996.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. aired on NBC from 1964 to 1968 and featured a network of spies called the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. The series starred Robert Vaughan and David McCallum and took many cues from the swinging spy genre made famous and wildly popular by the James Bond films of the time. The original series followed two characters who were international trouble shooters outfitted with all kinds of handy gadgets. Earlier reports indicated that whoever would star in the film might take a solo approach to the action, but that remains to be seen at this point.

Cruise is keeping busy. His latest film Jack Reacher earned $216.5 million worldwide. Meanwhile, he has sci-fi actioners Oblivion ready to bow on April 19 as well as All You Need Is Kill on March 7, 2014. Mission: Impossible 5, Our Name is Adam and Van Helsing are also in the works.
