What's the point of an Independence Day sequel if Will Smith isn't around to welcome the aliens to Earth? As it turns out, both Smith and director Roland Emmerich may have arrived at the same conclusion.

Emmerich tells Digital Spy that talks with Smith are about to begin, even though the filmmaker planned to move forward on 2015's Independence Day sequel without the high-profile star's involvement.

"I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first," said the director. "Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

Emmerich previously revealed that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are back for the next Independence Day, scheduled for release on July 3, 2015. Now, based on his comments about Smith, it looks like all three of the first film's lead characters could be back in action.
