The third installment of the popular buddy-cop franchise and first not directed by Michael Bay, the new film will pit the two detectives against the cartels with the head of a cartel, portrayed by Jacob Scipio, tasked to kill Lowrey as the streets of Miami become the battlefield for a new war on drugs.

Principal photography on the film began last week in Atlanta, as revealed by camera tests of Smith and Lawrence shared online by Smith and his son Jaden through their Instagram accounts.
