All Kitai (Jaden Smith) and Cypher (Will Smith) wanted was to spend some quality time together in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film After Earth. Instead, the father and son team wind up crash-landing on a long-abandoned Earth that has evolved every creature for the specific purpose of killing humans. Columbia Pictures released some promotional materials in December, but the new trailer delves much deeper into the film's story.
As you can see, this new version gives more background on Jaden's character Kitai, showing why he and his dad Cypher are on a ship in the first place. The new, more action-packed clip also reveals the details of Kitai's mission, which involves retrieving the spacecraft's beacon in an effort to call for rescue.
Here's the official synopsis:
A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.
After Earth, which opens June 7, also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo and Isabelle Fuhrman.
