Gemini Man star Will Smith is working on a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air spinoff.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Westbrook Inc. -- the company Smith oversees alongside his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith -- is working on a spinoff series based on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. No release date or plot details were given for the spinoff series. It's not clear at this time what stage of development the project is in.
Originally airing from 1990 to 1996, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air starred Will Smith, James Avery, Janet Hubert-Whitten and Alfonso Ribeiro, in addition to many others. The show followed a fictionalized version of Smith being uprooted from West Philadelphia to Bel-Air after a fight. The immensely popular sitcom helped launch Smith's acting career, which has consisted of such films as I, Robot, I am Legend and Gemini Man. Smith was working on a reboot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 2015 through his Overbrook Entertainment, but no such project materialized.
If this project does indeed go forward, it would be the latest in a long line of '90s television series that have seen reboots and revivals over the last few years. Other sitcoms that have received -- or are in the process of receiving -- this treatment include Full House and Saved by the Bell.
Smith's current project, Gemini Man, is in theaters now. The movie is directed by Ang Lee from a script written by David Benioff, Billy Ray and Darren Lemke. The film also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong.
