Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars for 10 years following his slapping of Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will not allow Smith to attend the Oscars or any of its other events for the next 10 years following a special meeting. That meeting was attended by the Academy's board of governors and took place on Friday.

At the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, Smith slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's short hair in which he made a reference to G.I. Jane 2. Jada Pinkett Smith, who is Will Smith's wife, has alopecia, which causes hair loss. Smith then returned to his seat and began yelling, "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth" at Rock. Later in the night, Smith won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard.

There's some confusion at this time as to if Smith was asked to leave the event after he slapped Rock. While the Academy claims Smith was asked to leave, sources speaking on the condition of anonymity said no such request was ever actually made, though the possibility was discussed.

Following the event, many have criticized Smith's actions, including some of Hollywood's biggest names, and the Academy began a formal review of the actor. Smith, for his part, apologized for slapping Rock and later resigned from the Academy, calling his own actions "shocking, painful, and inexcusable." However, not everyone has been entirely critical of Smith. Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, voiced her support for the actor.

The slap seems to be having a negative effect on Smith's career. Netflix reportedly put an upcoming film of his, Fast and Loose, on hold following the event. Additionally, a recent poll indicated Smith's popularity plummeted after he slapped Rock.

Smith is an award-winning actor known for his roles in such projects as 1996's Independence Day, 2001's Ali and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air TV show, which ran from 1990 until 1996 on NBC. While Smith received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Muhammad Ali in Ali, King Richard is the first time he's won the accolade.
