WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau Of Supernatural Investigation,"Win or Lose," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Nana’s involvement in Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau Of Supernatural Investigation has been relatively minor so far. Although she wasn’t always knowledgeable about the full extent of the spirit world, she has abilities that are beyond the average human, and the anime's second season is strongly hinting that these abilities will be greatly expanded upon now.

Muhyo originally had a policy about not speaking with former clients about anything outside of business but she has made herself continuously relevant to Muhyo’s adventures nonetheless. Though she doesn’t have an official position with Muhyo, it is possible that Nana may one day become a more integral part of his team.

In the second episode of the first season, Nana demonstrated that she didn’t have any belief in the supernatural. In fact, it was someone related to her who brought her photos to Muhyo, who then identified the existence of the spirit. When Muhyo took on this case he discovered that the spirit in question was Nana’s father, a once-renowned photographer who started doctoring photos when his job was no longer providing the revenue it once had for his daughter. Turning into a ghost to stay with his daughter, Nana could see that her father kept an eye on her and it allowed her to have some closure.

After facing these trials with her father, Nana shows Muhyo and Roji pictures in an attempt to help with another case. In spite of Muhyo's policy, Roji wanted to listen to Nana’s case and acted on his own. This attitude shows Roji’s relative inexperience when it came to the early part of Season 1. The fact that he allowed Nana to potentially get hurt due to the way that he interacted with the spirit of the bridge showed that he had more room to grow.

While Muhyo shows up to save the day for that case, Nana continues to interact with the two of them as the season goes on. While ordinary people wouldn’t likely see what she has, in the fourth episode, she chooses to follow Muhyo and Roji through a magic circle that transports her to a major magic city which is full of buildings that serve as centers for various bureaus, as well as a school for young executors to become qualified.

As Nana has already been exposed to many places that would allow her to hone her innate talent, there’s no doubt that making connections with people in the city would benefit her if she intended to get more involved in spiritual matters. In the fourth episode, while she initially followed Muhyo and Roji, she ends up acquainted with their friend Yoichi. While Nana doesn’t have any direct role when it comes to exorcising spirits, she manages to develop a sort of bond with all of them.

The second season builds on the idea that Nana is able to fight spirits in a more direct manner. The beginning of the second season even emphasizes the fact that Nana has the qualities of a medium since it was her presence that caused her classmate’s game of Kokkuri-san to become deadly. While she didn’t mean to cause any harm to them, this incident, which Goryo becomes later involved with, proves that she can actively use this raw power.

Nana has already started to receive some tutelage in regards to how to control her ability, too. In the third episode of Season 2, Muhyo interferes with Goryo’s attempt to send the spirit that haunted a building project to hell but Nana’s powers are crucial to their plans. With Muhyo directing her, Nana is able to focus her abilities to call on a spirit that barely has any presence. By finding the daughter of this spirit, Nana allowed for the two of them to get back together and end the spirit’s rampage. With both of them together, the sentence is lessened so they can make it to purgatory someday.

The fact that Nana receives any guidance in this episode is unusual -- especially in the way that Muhyo handles his subordinate. When it comes to Roji, Muhyo only says what’s necessary. This is likely due to the fact that Muhyo believes in Roji’s innate potential, showing that he has faith in Roji when push comes to shove. Nana, meanwhile, has much less experience.

The biggest detail that supports Nana being on the path to being able to fight spirits is the opening for Season 2 of Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau Of Supernatural Investigation. In this opening, there is a scene in which Nana takes on a fighting stance and something that appears to be a fairy appears in front of her. It is possible that this fairy will fight on Nana’s behalf, although there is no clear indication as to where Nana is standing.

At the end of Episode 3, Muhyo officially loses the office that he once worked at. This means that Muhyo has a lot on his plate, and it may take some time before Nana can reach her long-teased potential.
