Will HBO’s Game of Thrones Catch Up to the Novels?

Winter is coming, but is it arriving fast enough?

A Song of Ice and Fire novelist George R.R. Martin spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the very real possibility of HBO’s Game of Thrones catching up with the fan-favorite fantasy books the show is based on. Martin has penned and published five novels in the series thus far; the sixth book, The Winds of Winter, is in progress, with no release date set.

“I think the odds against that happening are very long,” the author said when asked if he fears the show, now approaching its fourth season, might pass the novels’ release schedule. “I still have a lead of several gigantic books. If they include everything in the books, I don’t think they’re going to catch up with me. If they do, we’ll have some interesting discussions.”

For their part, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are both on the record with their hope that Martin releases the Ice and Fire novels before the Thrones TV series catches up with him.

“We still have our fingers crossed that George will get there,” said Weiss. “That’s what’s best for us, it’s what’s best for the fans. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

“Ideally the books come out first,” added Benioff.

“Ideally” being the operative word. There’s much more over at the article. It’s a fascinating must-read for fans of the novels harboring the very real fear that the show could outpace the source material.
