Wonder Woman will return to the big screen later this year in Wonder Woman 1984, which will see the character do battle with The Cheetah and Maxwell Lord, played by Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal respectively. The latter actor was personally picked by the film's director and co-writer Patty Jenkins, who recently explained why she chose him for the role.

"I worked with him, so I knew him," Jenkins told Variety. She and Pascal previously collaborated on an unaired TV pilot called Exposed that was made before Pascal's debut episode on Game of Thrones. "I didn’t need him to prove anything for me. I just loved the idea of him, and I thought he would be kind of unexpected, because he doesn’t scream 'villain.'"

Created by J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire and Keith Giffen, Maxwell Lord debuted in 1987's Justice League #1 and has appeared in such live-action projects as Supergirl and Smallville prior to Wonder Woman 1984. Once the benefactor of the Justice League, Lord has since taken on a more villainous role in the comics, beginning with 2005's Countdown to Infinite Crisis. However, it's not yet known if Pascal's version of the character will retain his mind control powers from the comics.

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 25.
