Warning: The following contains spoilers for Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #3, by Si Spurrier, Sergio Davila, Sean Parsons, Arif Prianto, Chris Sotomayor and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

The Black Knight is one of the most unheralded and underrated heroes on the Avengers' roster. The Marvel hero wields an ancient weapon called the Ebony Blade that is fueled by darkness and pain. The sword comes with great power, but it comes at the cost of unquenchable blood lust. The Ebony Blade has been wielded by many over the centuries, but Dane Whitman is the latest and most eccentric of the bunch.

While most of the Avengers have come to accept Dane, there's one member who harbors an intense dislike of the Knight. Thor has a serious problem with Whitman that was made apparent in the first issue of the Black Knight's new miniseries, and Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #3 offers insight as to why Thor hates the Black Knight.

When Thor was a young god, he was tasked by the Asgardian Bonecasters to cleanse the evil from a citadel. However, the original Black Knight was tasked with protecting the citadels' gates while King Arthur and his court had left the kingdom on a quest. Thor brought a brigade with him on his raid but was challenged to one-on-one combat by the Black Knight after he refused to let them pass.

Thor accepted and the two warriors engaged one another in battle. Thor underestimated the power of the Black Knight's Ebony Blade and was defeated, but the battle didn't end there. Thor's Northmen should have been free to go after their champion was defeated, but the Ebony Blade's bloodlust could not be so easily quelled, and the Black Knight went on to destroy the gathered warriors leaving their bodies stacked in front of the citadel.

Although Thor's memories of this event were erased, it seems like Thor may still hold some subconscious resentment over this defeat and the loss of his men. Getting beat one-on-one is one thing, but losing and not being able to protect your people from getting slaughtered is probably something Thor has lost sleep over many nights. While Dane Whitman isn't the Black Knight that embarrassed him in battle and killed his people, he still holds a grudge against anyone who wields the Ebony Blade. Thor is obviously letting his pride get in the way of his relationship with Dane, which is ironic considering the fact that he scolded Dane for being prideful in the first issue.

Despite the hate Thor holds for the Black Knight, his chemistry with Dane is combative but filled with sarcasm and humor. It's reminiscent of the on-screen MCU relationship Thor shared with Tony Stark and Captain America at times. With Kit Harrington set to debut as the MCU's Dane Whitman in Eternals, we could see him cross paths with Chris Hemsworth's Thor in a future film, which could bring this tense relationship to the next cinematic incarnation of the Avengers.
