A core element of G.I. Joe's fan-favorite ninja Snake Eyes is that he never talks in or out of his mask, yet Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins has found a canonical way around that.

In a new behind-the-scenes videoSnake Eyes actor Henry Goulding discussed how G.I. Joe comic writer Larry Hama truly defined Snake Eyes through a 1984 dialogue-free issue called "Silent Interlude," which also featured the first appearance of his longtime rival Storm Shadow. "When I did the comic, I made it character-centric. I came up with the backstory of Storm Shadow, takes Snake Eyes into the clan," Hama said.

"We try to find a balance between what is pre-existing G.I. Joe lore but also finding a way of updating it. Giving people more," Goulding said on the movie's characterization of Snake Eyes. As producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura said, "That opened up a world of opportunity. Let's do the origin story before he's lost his voice."

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will mark the titular character's third live-action appearance following 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation. In both movies, Snake Eyes was played by Ray Park, best known for his work as Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The film's trailer recently dropped, which teases Snake Eyes engaging in sword and gunplay against various henchmen, his early ninja training in the Arashikage clan alongside Storm Shadow and a glimpse of his iconic mask. A series of newly released photos also provide a better look at the Snake Eyes supporting cast, which includes other iconic G.I. Joe figures like Scarlett and The Baroness.

Directed by Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko and Tahehiro Hira as Kenta. The film arrives in theaters on July 23.
