Smallville showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar have confirmed that they have zero interest in revisiting the beloved DC series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote their newest series Wednesday, Gough and Millar were asked if they would be interested in reviving Smallville. "To be honest, no. I think we told that story, and they’re always refreshing Superman," Gough said. "I just read last night that James Gunn’s writing a new younger Superman movie, and I’m like, 'OK.' I feel like we were very, very fortunate to do the show when we did it because we got to make the show we wanted to make, and frankly, there was no committee sitting over us telling us what we could or couldn’t do. I mean, we had Warner’s features, who wouldn’t give us certain characters that we wanted, but we got to make the show we wanted to make which we wouldn’t be allowed to make that show today. There were so many deviations from the canon. One generation’s heresy is the next generation’s gospel."

Smallville aired on The CW from 2001 to 2011, running for 217 episodes across 10 seasons. The series was pitched with a "no tights, no flights" rule, meaning Clark Kent could never wear Superman's iconic costume or fly in the show. This edict allowed the writers to focus on the early years of Clark Kent and the decisions and stories that led him to eventually become the Man of Steel. Tom Welling portrayed Clark Kent in all 10 seasons of the show, with Kristen Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, Allison Mack and Justin Hartley also starring as Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Chloe Sullivan and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, respectively.

Smallville's Stars Are Working on an Animated Revival

Welling and Rosenbaum are currently developing a Smallville animated revival, which will serve as an eleventh season for the show and feature a fully-realized Man of Steel. "Clark had to become Superman, and Smallville could not be a Superman series. It just wasn't built that way," explained Welling explained about why Smallville ended after Season 10. "So what we're trying to do [with the animated series] is sort of jumping into this other arena where we can maybe service that idea and have fun doing so." Although the potential revival is still in the early stages of development, Welling has stated that he hopes the entire Smallville cast will return to voice their respective characters when the animated series moves into production.

With Henry Cavill no longer set to return as the Man of Steel in James Gunn's DC Universe, there is only one actor currently portraying the Big Blue Boy Scout: Tyler Hoechlin, who continues to star as Clark Kent/Superman in The CW series Superman & Lois. The popular superhero drama series will return for a third season on March 14, 2023, which will see Superman and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) take on Intergang and its leader Bruno Mannheim (Chad L. Coleman).

All 10 seasons of Smallville are available to stream on Hulu.
