Milestone Comics' characters will remain in a universe separate from the DC Universe -- which writer Reginald Hudlin argues is essential to establishing Milestone's identity.

During a DC press conference attended by CBR, Hudlin discussed why Milestone was standing apart from the DC Universe. "Milestone did a lot of things right off the top. And one of them was saying, 'Dakota is its own universe separate from the DCU.' They still managed to do some amazing crossover stories," Hudlin said.

He continued, "I think there'll be a lot of surprises when people continue to read the books. But there's no question that we don't want to be beholden to whatever's happening in the continuity of the DCU, which is great. I read those stories, too. But we're telling our own stories, and we need our own universe to do it."

The original Milestone Universe first crossed paths with the DC Universe during the "Worlds Collide" event, which saw Superman and his allies crossing over into the world of Milestone due to an extradimensional entity. Later, the Blood Syndicate's Dharma merged elements from the Milestone Universe with the mainstream DC Universe in the wake of Final Crisis. Milestone characters, including fan-favorite Static Shock, were briefly prominent during the New 52 initiative.
