Avatar: The Last Airbender introduced audiences to the four elements: Air, Earth, Water and Fire. However, as time went on, the franchise expanded and more deeply explored what one could do with each of those four elements. By the time The Legend of Korra rolled around, a number of new and powerful abilities -- like Metalbending -- had become more standard. However, there's on ability that's so rare it's virtually unseen in the franchise: Flight. In this video, we're going to break down just how Zaheer -- the villain of The Legend of Korra Season 3 -- was able to use the ability when other Airbenders couldn't.
Prior to Aang's time, Guru Laghima was said to have mastered flight and spent the rest of his life in the air. However, Zaheer is only the second Airbender in the show to master flight. The reason for his ability to fly lay in his Red Lotus teaching. The organization, which is an offshoot of the White Lotus, was anti-establishment and actually splintered over the original group's relationship to the Avatar. Freedom and union with the spirit are, fundamentally, the Red Lotus' goals, which is key to how Zaheer becomes untethered from the Earth.

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted on Nickelodeon in 2005 and ran for three seasons. Following the end of the show, a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, ran from 2012 until 2014. Since the end of that show, there have been a number of different comic books and novels set in the Avatar Universe. Currently, Netflix is working on a live-action adaptation of the series.
