Not too long ago, it was reported that when Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was being courted by Warner Bros. to helm DC film, the studio offered him whichever property he liked. And while Gunn ultimately settled on The Suicide Squad, a film starring Superman was also major option.

More recently, the director was why exactly chose to the Suicide Squad over the Man of Steel. "I chose the Suicide Squad as its one of my favorite properties in the world," Gunn replied. "It's the story I wanted to tell more than any other."

The director also explains that while he had the option to do a Superman movie, it would not specifically have been a sequel to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel -- and thus, likely would have been a fresh interpretation of the character. Similarly, Gunn's The Suicide Squad is not a sequel to David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad film, but is instead being treated as a total reboot.

Gunn seems to be having a great time directing The Suicide Squad, with the director describing the experience as the most fun he's had making a film. After The Suicide Squad finishes production, Gunn is expected begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios.
