Henry Cavill says his desire to reprise his role as Sherlock in Enola Holmes 2 comes down to setting a solid tone for the mystery film franchise.
Cavill, who plays the famous detective and brother of the titular character, told Total Film Magazine that he wanted to get things right for the sequel and ensure a clear direction for the franchise. "It's important to make sure the tone of things is not lost in the potential excitement of franchises and universes," he said. Additionally, Cavill credited the professionalism and energy of Millie Bobby Brown who has played Enola Holmes in both movies, saying he has enjoyed working with her during production and would love to again.
The Man of Steel star also expressed his interest in playing Sherlock for future installments of the Enola Holmes franchise. However, he hopes decision-makers have a clear vision for the series' future given his prior experiences with franchises. "I have experience with franchises going places, and going quiet, and other franchises popping up and becoming exciting. It's all about the decision-making up top and everything else that goes with it. I'm merely the hired work," Cavill said.
Enola Holmes 2: Back in Action
Enola Holmes 2 centers around a central mystery of missing government funds and documents, as the titular detective unravels a plot of extortion and bribery. According to Cavill, his character enjoys the challenges presented in the film. "I think part of him enjoys actually being genuinely challenged. It isn't boring. He's on the back foot, and against the ropes," he said.
The Enola Holmes film franchise is based on the novel series written by award-winning author Nancy Springer. In the first film, released on Netflix in September 2020, Cavill's character wasn't as prominent as in previous Sherlock adaptations given that the franchise focuses more on his sister.
The first official trailer for Enola Holmes 2 was released by Netflix in September 2022 while the second followed a few weeks later. The first promotional video saw Enola launch her detective agency but struggle to attract cases. In the latter trailer, she lands her first case as she teams up with Sherlock to find a missing girl who has discovered the secrets of various powerful people that could prove deadly. The Enoma Holmes sequel also features the returning Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes and Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury.
Enola Holmes 2 officially streams via Netflix on Nov. 4.
