WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If...? Season 1, Episode 9, "What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?," streaming now on Disney+.

The season finale of What If...? sees The Watcher break his oath to only observe in a last-ditch effort to save the multiverse from a version of Ultron with all six Infinity Stones. To do this, he has to bring together the Guardians of the Multiverse, a band of heroes seen throughout the season that include Captain Carter, T'Challa as Star-Lord and Gamora. But while most of the actors who played the live-action versions of these characters returned to voice them in What If...?, others like Zoe Saldaña were unable to. But who has taken Saldaña's place as Thanos' daughter?

In the episode, the Watcher finds a universe where Gamora and Tony Stark escape Sakaar and find Nidavellir. With the help of Eitri the dwarf, they join forces to construct the Infinity Crusher, a weapon that can destroy the stones. The Watcher interrupts this meeting of the minds to bring Gamora -- now wearing Thanos' armor and carrying his blade -- to help stop Infinity Ultron. But, while the voice saying Gamora's lines sounds like Saldaña, it's actually actress Cynthia McWilliams.

McWilliams started acting in 2006 in the film The Lake House and has since done work on movies, games and television as an actress and voice actress. Since then, some of her other live-action appearances include Prison Break, Nashville and more recently, Bosch. These live-action roles most likely helped her give the same type of timing and delivery in the animated What If...? Doing so not only makes the scene feel more real, it also comes across as more organic.

However, a more significant reason McWilliams feels like such a natural in the role is that she has been doing voice work on games and television since her first role as Senna for League of Legends. Since then, she has been a part of games like inFamous: Second Son and Far Cry 5. she's also lent her voice to shows like We Bare Bears and Clarence. Mixing her voice acting style with her live-action experiences has helped make sure Gamora feels and sounds as natural as possible.

Many other voice actors have had to push their skills in new ways when voicing these characters. To sound similar but unique, due to being multiverse variants, is no easy feat. However, McWilliams did a fantastic job with Gamora by making sure she still spoke with stoic confidence yet still had moments where her emotions could be felt. Ultimately, she still speaks in the same tempo and cadence as Saldaña, which will surely make fans think twice about who is voicing her.

Cynthia McWilliams is another amazing addition to this cast of characters, both new and old. Like others in similar positions, she brings to life a version of Gamora whose life experience greatly differs from that of her live-action counterpart. As a result, Mcwilliams gets to play a character within a character, keeping the spirit of Saldaña's character at her core while sculpting something completely new.

To see Gamora in action, season 1 of What If...? is streaming now on Disney+.
