Morbius director Daniel Espinosa says Spider-Man fans will soon learn which version of the webslinger exists in Sony's universe of villain-centric Marvel spinoff films.

During a Q&A session with CinemaBlend, Espinosa confirmed that the Jared Leto-led Morbius does indeed take place in the same universe as Sony's two Venom films, which star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. Furthermore, the director confirmed that Spider-Man himself exists in this universe as well. When asked which version of Spider-Man resides in the Venom-Verse, Espinosa replied, "It is my understanding that audiences will discover the answer soon."

Of course, fans already have their guesses. Sony and Marvel Studios' recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together three generation of Spider-Men in Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire by breaking open the multiverse. Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock/Venom briefly appeared in No Way Home's mid-credits sequence, thus paying off the credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. By the time all was said and done, however, this version of Eddie left the MCU and was pulled back into his own universe.

So, we can safely deduce that the version of Spider-Man who exists in Venom's universe is not the Tom Holland version from the MCU. Additionally, Tobey Maguire's version of Spidey already has his own version of Eddie Brock/Venom, who was played by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3, the third and final film in Raimi-Verse. As such, some fans have postulated that Hardy's Venom actually hails from the Webb-Verse of Amazing Spider-Man films, which starred Andrew Garfield in the lead role. In No Way Home, Garfield's Spidey even expressed his desire to "fight an alien." That being said, another possibility is that the Spider-Man who shares a universe with Hardy's Venom is a different version entirely.

Notably, it recently came to light that the promotional material for Morbius may have exaggerated the Sony film's connections to the larger Spider-Man mythos and the MCU. Reportedly, numerous scenes featuring Spider-Man Easter eggs that were shown in the film's trailer are not present in the final film. However, Espinosa affirmed in the CinemaBlend Q&A that the version of Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton) who appears in Morbius is, in fact, the same version that appeared in the 2017 MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming -- meaning the multiversal shenanigans aren't over just yet. It should also be noted that a third Venom film starring Hardy is currently in the works.
