Most people know Severus Snape as the Potions Master at Hogwarts. He is also revealed to be a double agent for Albus Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix. But many people forget that he also invented a number of spells. In the Harry Potter movies, Snape came up with the Sectumsempra curse when he was a student at Hogwarts, and it's known to cause painful lacerations on the target. But the films don't explore all the spells Snape invented in depth. So, go through each spell Snape created and what they were capable of.

The Dangling Jinx Was Used for Good and Bad

The Dangling Jinx, also known as the Levicorpus spell, causes the target to dangle upside-down in midair by their ankle. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry, unaware of its effects, uses the Dangling Jinx on Ron after discovering it in the Half-Blood Prince's copy of Advanced Potion-Making, resulting in a bout of hilarity. Harry manages to get Ron down by using the counter-jinx: Liberacorpus. Professor Lupin also reveals to Harry that the Dangling Jinx was quite popular during his time at Hogwarts, often used as a practical joke, although the students had no idea that Snape created it.

While serving as a great tool for a prank, the Levicorpus spell can also be used for more malicious reasons. In fact, during their time at Hogwarts, James Potter once used it on Snape to humiliate him. And at the Quidditch World Cup, a group of Death Eaters use the Dangling Jinx to terrorize a Muggle family. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Lord Voldemort uses the Dangling Jinx to torture Charity Burbage, the Muggle Studies teacher from Hogwarts, before feeding her to the snake Nagini. Hermione remarks that she finds the spell irresponsible and cruel.

The Langlock Jinx Is a Comedic Spell

The Langlock Jinx glues the target's tongue to the roof of their mouth so they can't speak or cast counter-spells. Unlike the Dangling Jinx, which is sometimes utilized for cruel purposes, the Langlock Jinx is mainly used in humorous ways. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry uses it twice on caretaker Argus Filch much to the other students' delight. When Harry is in the hospital wing after Cormac McLaggen hits him with a Beater's bat during a Quidditch match, Kreacher and Dobby fight in front of him. Peeves the Poltergeist eggs the squabbling house-elves on, and Harry casts the Langlock Jinx on Peeves to silence him before breaking up the quarrel.

The Muffliato Charm Is Used to Keep Secrets

The Muffliato Charm fills the target's ears with a buzzing sound so they can't overhear the caster's conversation. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, after Professor Sprout reprimands Harry, Ron and Hermione for talking during class, Ron remarks that Harry should have used the Muffliato Charm on her. Later in the book, when Harry is in the hospital wing, he uses the spell on Madame Pomfrey so that she can't hear Kreacher and Dobby. And despite her initial disapproval of the Muffliato Charm, Hermione uses it a couple of times in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She uses it so the Weasleys can't overhear her conversation with Harry and Ron. And when she, Harry and Ron search for Voldemort's Horcruxes, she casts it on the campsite for protection.

The Toenail-Growing Hex Is Great Payback

The Toenail-growing hex causes the victim's toenails to grow quickly. It is often used as a mean prank or as revenge against bullies. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, soon after Harry finds the Advanced Potion-Making textbook, he uses the Toenail-growing hex on Vincent Crabbe in the corridor. Later in the novel, Ron suggests that Harry use it on the obnoxious Cormac McLaggen after his tomfoolery causes Gryffindor to lose a Quidditch match and put Harry in the hospital.
