In this feature we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like the first time someone said, "Avengers Assemble!" or the first appearance of Batman's giant penny or the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth or the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter. Stuff like that. Here is an archive of all the When We First Met features so far! Check 'em out!

Reader Frank A. wrote in to ask when did Wonder Woman first gain the ability to fly?

Right from Sensation Comics #1, Wonder Woman's mode of transportation was a flying invisible plane instead of flying on her own...

Here is a When We First Met on the evolution of the Invisible plane to becoming an Invisible jet. In that column, I noted how pretty much as soon as Ross Andru and Mike Esposito took over from Wonder Woman co-creator H.G. Peter in 1958, writer Robert Kanigher took the time to update the series, giving Wonder Woman an invisible jet for the first time.

An issue before that, however, in Wonder Woman #98, we got a new origin for Wonder Woman, along with, for the first time, her ability to fly on "air currents"...

In the Post-Crisis contnuity, Greg Potter and George Perez just had the Greek god Hermes give Wonder Woman the ability to outright fly (in Wonder Woman #1, before she was even technically born!)...

So there you go, Frank! Thanks for the suggestion! If anyone out there is curious about when we first saw a certain notable part of comic book history, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com!
