In this feature we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like the first time someone said, "Avengers Assemble!" or the first appearance of Batman's giant penny or the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth or the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter. Stuff like that. Here is an archive of all the When We First Met features so far! Check 'em out!

With the announcement that Marc Singer will be playing Matthew Shrieve (the leader of the Creature Commandos) on Arrow this season, we figured we'd show you all the debut of the Creature Commandos!

The Creature Commandos first appeared in 1980's Weird War Tales #93, drawn by Pat Broderick and John Celardo and written by J.M. DeMatteis (who has since noted that his career at DC was sort of saved by him coming up with the Creature Commandos, as work was hard to get at DC following the DC Implosion, where they canceled a whole pile of titles all at once)...

In Weird War Tales #110, the group gains their first recruit. In this issue (written by Robert Kanigher and drawn by Dan Spiegle), a doctor tries to cure the Commandos but she can't. However, she tragically ends up turned into a monster herself!

She joins the team as Dr. Medusa.

In Weird War Tales #101, Robert Kanigher and Pepe Morino Casaris introduced the latest G.I. Robot, J.A.K.E....

In Weird War Tales #111 (by Kanigher and Spiegle), J.A.K.E. joins the Commandos...

Only to sacrifice himself later in the issue...

In Weird War Tales #115 (by Kanigher and Fred Carrillo), J.A.K.E. 2 joins the Commandos...
