In this feature we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like "the first time someone said, 'Avengers Assemble!'" or "the first appearance of Batman's giant penny" or "the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth" or "the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter." Stuff like that. Here is an archive of all the When We First Met features so far! Check 'em out!

With the debut of the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tonight, I thought I'd spotlight the first comic book appearances of the various cast members of Season 1 (and the upcoming members of Season 2) that I did not already feature the first time around.

Victoria Hand was part of Season 1. She first appeared in Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca's Invincible Iron Man #8, as Norman Osborn's assistant (she took on a greater role in Brian Michael Bendis' Dark Avengers, which came out at the same time - she was likely created FOR Bendis' Dark Avengers book and just happened to debut here chronologically)...

Eric Koenig was a Nazi who switched sides in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandoes #27 by Stan Lee, Dick Ayers and John Tartaglione...

Major Glenn Talbot first showed up in Tales to Astonish #61 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko...

That's it for Season 1 characters that I did not feature last time. Now for Season 2 characters!

Peggy Carter is getting her own series and will also appear on the premiere episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a flashback. That's how we first met her in Tales of Suspense #77, after a quick reference to her in Tales of Suspense #75...

She was a freedom fighter during World War II...

Cap is separated from her and believes that she was killed (she wasn't - she had lost her memory due to an explosion).

He eventually strikes up a relationship with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent known as Sharon Carter. In Captain America #162, Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema reveal that Sharon's older sister, Peggy Carter, WAS Cap's old girlfriend!

As I detailed in an old Abandoned an' Forsaked, that sister relationship soon became aunt-niece and then finally grandaunt-niece.

Along with Peggy and other Howling Commandoes in episode 1 is Jim Morita, who appeared in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandoes #38 by Roy Thomas, Dick Ayers and John Tartaglione...

A new addition to the show's cast this year is Lance Hunter, who first appeared in Captain Britain #19 by Gary Friedrich, Herb Trimpe and Fred Kida...

Another new addition is Al McKenzie, who first appeared in Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. #3 by Bob Harras, Paul Neary and Kim DeMulder...

Later in the season we'll meet Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird. Morse first appeared in Astonishing Tales #6 by Gerry Conway, Barry Windsor-Smith and Bill Everett. However, she is essentially a COMPLETELY different character than she eventually became. So I'll just leave her first appearance here for now and when it comes closer to her actual first television appearance we'll do more about her strange, strange evolution as a comic book character.

Finally, in Secret Warriors #2, Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli introduce us to Kraken of Hydra, who will be a major character on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season...

However, that Kraken is actually someone secretly pretending to be the Kraken (heads up to Marek for reminding me of that fact). The actual Kraken, Daniel Whitehall (who is who is going to be on the TV series) appeared in Secret Warriors #11 in a flashback, where he first meets the man known as the Gorgon...

That's it for now!
