Each day in June you'll get an entry showing you the first appearance of seemingly minor characters, phrases, objects or events that later became notable parts of comic book lore. Not major stuff like "the first appearance of Superman," but rather, "the first time someone said, 'Avengers Assemble!'" or "the first appearance of Batman's giant penny" or "the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth" or "the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter." Stuff like that. Here is an archive of what I've featured so far.

Enjoy!

First appearance of the Bat-Signal

In 1942's Detective Comics #60, we first see the Bat-Signal in action!

Can you imagine Batman just taking a normal vacation nowadays?

First time Krypto "talked" via thought balloons

A few folks were wondering how soon after Krypto debuted did he begin to "talk" through his thought balloons?

Well, it wasn't very long at all, really - his second appearance, actually!

Here he returns from his journey in space (from Adventure Comics #210)...

Of course, he almost spoils Superboy's secret identity in front of Lana Lang...

So Superboy goes off to get a Krypto "stand-in" to fool Lana, but Krypto doesn't understand his master's actions...

Hilarity ensues.

First time Nightcrawler's teleportation had a "bamf" sound effect

A couple of readers waned to know this one.

It appeared in 1975's X-Men #95...

So just two issues were without the "bamf"!
