Each day in June you'll get an entry showing you the first appearance of seemingly minor characters, phrases, objects or events that later became notable parts of comic book lore. Not major stuff like "the first appearance of Superman," but rather, "the first time someone said, 'Avengers Assemble!'" or "the first appearance of Batman's giant penny" or "the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth" or "the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter." Stuff like that. Here is an archive of what I've featured so far.

Enjoy!

First "Fastball Special"

A bunch of folks asked about this one. Well, here it is, from 1976's X-Men #100....

Introduction of Batman's Utility Belt

When Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27, he wore a belt...

but although it looks just like the utility belt, he didn't actually do anything with it that showed that it was, indeed, a utility belt.

It was not until 1939's Detective Comics #29 that Batman made a point of showing that he kept stuff in the capsules in the belt...

and (of course) he used them in that issue...

First Appearance of Edwin Jarvis

I featured Alfred's debut yesterday, so it is only fair to feature Jarvis' first appearance today!

Jarvis appeared in 1964's Tales of Suspense #59, the first issue with Captain America sharing the title with Iron Man.

It is still amazing how long it took for Jarvis to show up!
