WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 5, "The Best of Smallville," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

The latest episode of Superman & Lois ended with a surprising cliffhanger when Jordan Kent was attacked by Tag Harris, his football teammate that just happens to be a superpowered metahuman. However, fans will have to wait a considerable amount of time to figure out what happens next because the series is going on an extended hiatus. Indeed, Superman and Lois will return with a new episode on Tuesday, May 18.

The nearly two-month-long break comes as the result of "a COVID-related production interruption" that previously affected the series. While the series is on hiatus, Supergirl will take its place in The CW's schedule, airing after The Flash on Tuesdays.

In the show's latest episode, "The Best of Smallville," the threat of Morgan Edge became all the more tangible when one of his test subjects, now powered by "X-kryptonite," took Superman head-on. But Edge and his army of fabricated Kryptonians aren't the only threat lurking in Smallville. Later in the episode, the Stranger, aka Captain Luthor, approached Lois Lane, posing as a reporter. He offered to join forces with her in taking Edge down, but fans know the supervillain is only getting close to her for nefarious purposes. After all, Luthor is a soldier from a parallel world where an evil Superman killed all of his friends, and he has made it his goal to take out Earth-Prime's Man of Steel.

"The Best of Smallville" then delivered a shocking surprise when Luthor revealed that, on his world, he was married to Lois Lane. This makes his fight much more personal, and the remainder of the season will likely explore the full ramifications of this revelation.

Meanwhile, in the series' previous episode, "Haywire," Tag Harris developed superpowers as a result of the injuries he sustained following the explosion at the Shuster Mines. The accident revealed he was a metahuman, and he was taken to a special school for young metahumans. At the time, it appeared as if this was the last fans would see of Tag for a while, but the football player made his abrupt return at the end of "The Best of Smallville," horrified by what he had become and blaming Jordan Kent for what had happened to him.

The episode ended with Tag unleashing his new abilities on a helpless Jordan. But now that he's backed into a corner, this could be the time when the youngest Kent's superpowers manifest once again. Unfortunately, to see how this cliffhanger is resolved, fans will have to wait until the series returns on May 18.

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
