Three new actors have been added to the cast of Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, with Ceara Coveney to be playing the leading role of Elayne Trakand in the show's second season.

The casting was announced today during The Wheel of Time's panel at New York Comic Con. In addition to Coveney, Natasha O'Keeffe and Meera Syal have been cast in Season 2, although the characters they'll be playing have not yet been revealed.

Coveney is a British actor whose prior film appearances include 2019's The Amazing World of Emma. Her character Elayne belongs to the royal family of Andor, a nation which will become important as the scope of the high fantasy story expands. Elayne is the Daughter-Heir, or crown princess, who also has the ability to channel and is likely to form significant relationships with Season 1's characters such as Rand and Egwene.

O'Keeffe is probably best known for her roles in Peaky Blinders and Misfits, while Syal is a stage and film actor whose credits include playing Dr. Patel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doctor Strange. She also appeared in Paddington 2 and in the BBC series Broadchurch starring David Tennant.

The characters that O'Keeffe and Syal will play in The Wheel of Time are undisclosed, but both will be series regulars, and possibilities include Elayne's mother Morgase, and the Aes Sedai Verin or Elaida.

The Wheel of Time, which is based on the bestselling fantasy novels by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, has been in development at Amazon since 2018. Set in a world in which only women can work magic by channeling the One Power, the story focuses on Moiraine, a member of the all-female organization of Power-wielding Aes Sedai. Moiraine is searching for the prophesied savior of the world known as the Dragon Reborn, and the quest leads her to five young villagers who will become caught up in a worldwide conflict as they each discover their own power. However, if one of them is a man who can channel, he'll be in danger from both the world and himself.

Season 2 of The Wheel of Time was announced in May this year, and production on it began in July. The first three episodes of Season 1 will premiere on Amazon on November 19.
