What’s Going On With X-Men: First Class?

What’s Going On With X-Men: First Class?

By now, you’ve all seen the infamous X-Men: First Class cast photo. If you didn’t like it, you’re not alone: Matthew Vaughn, the director of the film, took the photo to task earlier this week with some truly choice words: “I don’t know where the hell that came from. I don’t think it’s a Fox image. It’s not a pre-approved image. When I found out, I said, what the fuck is this shit, and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well. I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it. I was like ‘Jesus Christ.'”

Considering that a hi-res version of that same photo is now available, it certainly seems as if the photo is Fox-approved. And while Vaughn’s comments are refreshingly honest, perhaps they’re reflective of some greater difficulties surrounding First Class. El Mayimbe at Latino Review (via CBR’s Comics Reel) reports on some of these rumored woes, not the least of which is the fact that “the movie is still shooting in LA while Vaughn is somewhere else editing.” The production isn’t merely shooting pick-ups, according to the report, but rather “six weeks – almost a whole film – worth of stuff.” Latino Review writes that Vaughn and his crew “ran from location to location but never got the right stuff, or stuff that worked,” and that “that hot mess of a film has not been coming together.”

There’s no way of confirming or denying the report — even Latino Review points out that Fox reps will deny the story — but even Vaughn himself has confessed to some difficulties on the film: “I’ve never worked under such time pressure. The good thing about the independent world is I never even knew if I was going to get distribution. I’m used to finishing a film and then crossing your fingers that someone is going to like it. This is totally doing it the other way around. We’ve definitely got a release date and we’ve got to make it.”

So, what do you think? Do you believe the Latino Review report, or are you confident in what you’ve seen from First Class so far?
