WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 5, "The Chamber of Judgment," now available on Hulu via FX.

What We Do in the Shadows knows its way around a horror movie reference. Whether it's a Vampiric Council full of pop culture icons, a gag at Twilight's expense, or an ironic reference to The Shining, it isn't afraid to evoke the wider world of cinematic horror for a laugh.

The latest shout out to the cinematic horror canon injected some levity into the vampire roommates' new responsibilities with their local vampiric council. In the process, What We Do in the Shadows pays tribute to the iconic mask worn by multiple slashers in the Scream franchise.

Nandor and Nadja's bickering over who got to sit on the council's throne as supreme leader set the tone for their first Vampiric Council Tribunal. Nandor's familiar, and current Vampiric Council head of security, Guillermo used the chaos caused by Nandor and Nadja's dysfunction to put himself on the throne, if only in a ceremonial position.

Once the ceremony finally starts, it's clear that the dysfunction isn't just limited to the council's new leaders. When the trials start, the diminutive wraiths who perform menial tasks for the council change up their look. Instead of hiding their faces with hoods, they wear grotesque masks while serving as the vampire's bailiffs.

Nadja is taken aback by the change to the wraiths' uniform (Nandor and Guillermo both appear to be oblivious about it). The Guide, who has been showing Nadja and Nadja the ropes, explains that the wraiths wear "special masks" during the Ceremony of Judgment to look scarier. It's another example of the surprising amount of internal consistency the show's otherwise absurd universe adheres to.

After The Guide explains the purpose of the masks, she chides one of the wraiths for being out of uniform. Instead of their ceremonial mask, they're wearing a Ghostface mask. This isn't a first for the wraith, whom The Guide identifies solely as Number 5. Her only response is an agitated "every time with that one" to Nadja before the wraith hastily changes into their council-mandated mask.

Unlike other references on What We Do in the Shadows, like the ongoing rivalry between werewolves and vampires that hearkens back to Twilight and Underworld, the wraith's Ghostface mask didn't factor heavily into the episode's plot. It was a sight gag that made sense given the wraiths' all black cloaks, similar to what the Ghostface killers in the Scream films wear. The Guide's irritation at Number 5 repeatedly wearing the wrong mask adds some workplace comedy to the show's repertoire, which might be a recurring source of humor as Nadja and Nandor continue their work on the council.

Scream is an appropriate franchise to reference in a horror comedy. It's always traded on referential humor. While Scream and What We Do in the Shadows reside in wildly different horror sub-genres, they can both frequently have fun at the expense of horror movie tropes. While Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement's sensibilities aren't the same as Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's, it's possible that What We Do in the Shadows wouldn't exist without Scream paving the way for self-aware takes on horror. It's nice to see the link between the two franchises acknowledged.
