WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 5, "The Chamber of Judgement," now available on Hulu via FX.

One cliché about vampires is that they’re unable to keep up with fashion and technology, leaving them hidebound and enshrouded in the decayed trappings of centuries past. The original novel Dracula made a point of it by depicting its vampire count as an old man in a rotting castle who needed to travel to a vibrant city like London to grow young again. Naturally, What We Do in the Shadows makes great use of this, as its centuries-old protagonists still dress in 19th-century finery and find inventions like roller skates a novel idea.

Season 3, Episode 5, "The Chamber of Judgement" takes another savage stab at the trope, this time with Colin Robinson as the unfortunate victim. Preparing for his usual energy-sucking banality, he makes a joke about Jar Jar Binks. It goes completely over his undead companion’s head, leaving him flustered and at a loss.

Jar Jar Binks In front of Senate

What We Do in the Shadows’ vampires repeatedly fail to grasp the nuances of modern culture, which has made for some of the show’s funniest moments. Nandor, for example, famously referred to the NFL championship as “a Superb Owl” party, while this week’s episode involves a “conduct harassment training video” delivered on a 16mm projector. Along with Guillermo, Colin Robinson normally acts as a counterweight, since both of them are more or less creatures of the 21st century and can behave accordingly.

Jar Jar is apparently one of Colin’s tricks to drain the energy from his victims. He has others, including a stiflingly dull Agatha Christie board game and a lecture on the nobility of community college sports delivered while blocking the game on the set. Jar Jar is presumably on the list as well, and as he and Laszlo head over to the neighbors' for a “boys’ night,” he launches into an extended impersonation of the maligned Star Wars character.

Yet with Laszlo, it doesn’t work. Not only has he never heard of Jar Jar, but he politely calls the impersonation "very funny indeed" to Colin’s consternation. The joke is doubly funny because it’s actually quite a good impersonation, tinged with a little extra unnecessary screech to drive the point home. Laszlo, who lacks the barest fundaments of the concept, is utterly unmoved.

It provides telling insight into Colin’s modus operandi. He needs modern culture to determine what’s boring, and the mixture requires surprising delicacy. If he’s too obscure in his references, he’ll just confuse his intended victims and he won’t be able to feed off of them. So he has to stay up-to-date not only on traditionally annoying things like insurance policies, but things from movies and television that people might find annoying. Yesterday’s fad is tomorrow's irritant, and unless he knows which is which, he’s apt to go hungry when feeding.

Luckily, Colin comes prepared, and his other tricks appear to have the desired effects on his targets. Laszlo remains ignorant of it all as he struggles to understand his neighbor Sean’s Ponzi scheme involving high-end pillows and eventually arrives at a court hearing in a barrister's wig. The vampire's anachronisms give the joke a bit of a double sting too, highlighting both characters’ all-too-human shortcomings and reminding the viewer that nothing comes easy for the bloodsuckers of What We Do in the Shadows.

To see Colin's Jar Jar Binks impression, the first five episodes of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 are streaming now on Hulu via FX.
