What We Do in the Shadows Teaser Highlights a Drawback to Immortality

Although being immortal has its perks, the latest teaser trailer for the upcoming FX series What We Do in the Shadows shows the downside of celebrating your birthday when you are a vampire.

The image features the illuminated face of head vampire Nandor, played by Kayvan Novak, revealing his fangs in a growing smile with ritualistic chanting in the background. The scene pulls back to reveal his fellow vampires and loyal familiar singing him happy birthday without any rhythm, pitch or unity whatsoever. There is also the flames of a birthday cake covered with too many candles to count, signifying his long life as an immortal vampire. Nandor rolls his eyes and attempts to blow out the candles repeatedly, with the effort revealing a more traditional vampire face before he accidentally lights his sleeve on fire.

Based on the 2014 mockumentary film of the same name which told the hilarious story of a group of vampires trying to live together but also survive in the 21st century, creators Taika Waiti and Jermaine Clement were unable to continue the story as a movie sequel but announced plans to expand the vampire format through television. FX ordered the pilot and later a total of ten episodes which the teaser announces will be released in March 2019.
