The best villains are always the worst beings, and in Star Wars the “big-bads” are almost always Sith Lords. An ancient offshoot of the Jedi religion, the Sith sought power for themselves and domination over the Force. Causing pain and suffering in others was how they increased their abilities and drew enjoyment from life. Essentially, their beliefs were the exact opposite of the Jedi Order, and as such, the two groups were sworn enemies for millennia.

Star Wars' supplemental material added depth to the franchise’s villainous ranks for years, but when Disney acquired the rights to George Lucas’ creation, the company made sweeping changes – keeping the films canon but dubbing everything else Legends. However, Disney has started to add some material back into canon over the years, so here’s a look at all of the Sith that Disney currently has in its Star Wars canon.

Darth Vader

As the original Sith, Darth Vader was one of the most popular characters in the whole franchise. He first appeared in the opening minutes of A New Hope as a now-evil, former Jedi. His dark, mechanical suit – combined with his command of the Dark Side and affinity for telekinetically pinching people’s tracheas – inspired terror in everyone he encountered. After serving his Emperor for years, he was finally redeemed by his son Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi.

Darth Sidious

Introduced as a hologram in The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Sidious, aka Emperor Palpatine, was Vader’s master and probably the most powerful Sith in canon. He was the architect and ruler of the Galactic Empire during the original trilogy. Sidious was also as conniving as he was powerful because he planned and orchestrated the fall of the Republic while in the office of supreme chancellor. On top of that, he nearly accomplished the destruction of the Jedi Order during the Great Jedi Purge.

Darth Maul

Darth Maul might be the coolest-looking Sith in the franchise. He was introduced in The Phantom Menace as an early apprentice of Darth Sidious. After seemingly having his ambitions and his life cut short by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Maul returned in multiple Star Wars projects to seek revenge on Obi-Wan for ruining his potential and on Sidious for casting him aside. Maul was known for his aggressive fighting style and his iconic double-bladed lightsaber.

Darth Tyranus

Also known as Count Dooku, Tyranus was Darth Maul’s replacement. He first appeared in Attack of the Clones as a former Jedi who became disillusioned with the Jedi Council’s beliefs. At some point after that, Sidious found him and recruited him to the Dark Side. As an expert duelist, Tyranus was the face of the Separatist war effort during the Clone Wars but died ingloriously at the hands of Anakin Skywalker shortly before the war drew to a close.

Darth Plagueis

In Legends, Plagueis was Darth Sidious’ master and was killed in a drunken stupor during the events of The Phantom Menace. However, in canon, Darth Plagueis was only name-dropped by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith as a legendary Sith lord who could cheat death. His story was ironic in that he could save other people from death but was killed in his sleep by his apprentice. The indication is that Sidious was that apprentice but details are not confirmed and Palpatine notoriously bends the truth. So, a lot is still possible for Darth Plagueis in canon.

Darth Bane

Darth Bane most notably created the Sith’s "Rule of Two" after the Battle of Ruusan. It stated that there could only ever be two Sith at a time so that a master could have power and an apprentice could crave it – thereby the Sith would endure and grow their strength until they were ready to overthrow the Jedi. He was confirmed to be a part of the new canon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, when Yoda traveled to the planet of Moraband and briefly conversed with a specter of Darth Bane.

Darth Momin

Darth Momin was introduced in the Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comic series. He was a Sith scholar and sculptor. Briefly trained by Darth Shaa, he quickly killed her because of a disagreement in philosophies. Once on his own, he had planned to pour his yellow Force lightning into an engine with enough power to destroy an entire city. In the process, he found a way to slow down time and freeze people in their moment of greatest terror. Unfortunately for him, the Jedi intervened and killed his body, leaving his consciousness trapped in his mask.

Darth Revan

Revan was the Jedi who changed his alleigance to the Force the most.

Revan was confirmed as part of canon in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - The Visual Dictionary. In the entry about Sith Trooper units, each legion is named for an ancient Sith Lord, and one of them is named after Darth Revan. In Legends, Revan had a long and complicated history. He was a maverick Jedi that was drawn to the Dark Side and terrorized the Jedi Order. Eventually, he was redeemed and defeated his former apprentice, who was still a Sith. Then, he was drawn back into conflict with a hidden Sith Empire and its dark lord, who had turned Revan evil in the first place. He died while fighting that Emperor, but his spirit was split into dueling personalities for a time after his death. In canon, though, all fans have right now is his name.

Darth Andeddu

Confirmed as canon by the Sith Trooper Legion named after him, Andeddu is an otherwise mysterious figure in canon. He first appeared as a holocron in the Star Wars: Republic series of comics from Dark Horse, and his spirit was sought after by many for his knowledge. Andeddu is believed to have discovered the ability of essence transfer, and he supposedly coined the title of “Darth” that the Sith used for millennia after his physical death.

Darth Tenebrous

Like Andeddu, Tenebrous was confirmed as canon by a Sith Trooper Legion name. In Legends, Tenebrous was Darth Plagueis’ master. He was a zealous follower of Darth Bane’s “Rule of Two” philosophy. Like Palpatine, Tenebrous led a double life. He was also Rugess Nome, an aristocratic starship designer. Tenebrous was also obsessed with manipulating the future and controlling the Force through science until Plagueis killed him.

Darth Phobos

Darth Phobos

Also added to canon by her Sith Trooper Legion shoutout, Darth Phobos’ whereabouts are unknown in canon. In Legends, she lived thousands of years before the Clone Wars as a Sith lord. She wanted to grow her power, though, so she killed many of her peers and began a fanatical cult that worshiped her. She earned the name of “The Hidden Fear” and attacked both Jedi and Sith. Eventually, she was killed by a joint force of Jedi and Sith. Phobos also appeared as a simulacrum in the Jedi Temple, activated by Vader's secret apprentice Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Darth Desolous

Darth Desolous

Like Phobos, Darth Desolous was canonized as a Sith Trooper Legion's namesake. In Legends, Desolous was originally a Jedi Master, but after studying Sith teachings he was expelled from the Jedi Order. He trained an army of his native Pau'ans in martial arts to exact revenge on the Jedi. During a battle on the planet Yaga Minor, Desolous was killed but not before taking nearly two thousand Jedi with him. He also appeared as a simulacrum that Starkiller activated in the Jedi Temple in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Darth Tanis

Tanis was also canonized by her Sith Trooper Legion name. She was an ancient Sith Lord who created the superweapon in the Sith Temple on the planet of Malachor, which was shown in Star Wars Rebels. Using kyber weaponry, the weapon’s activation resulted in the Great Scourge of Malachor where all present combatants perished – Jedi and Sith alike turned to stone.

Naga Sadow

Naga Sadow was brought into canon in the junior novelization of The Rise of Skywalker. Sadow was one of the statues that Kylo Ren sees when he enters the Sith Citadel on Exegol. According to the in-universe Qel-Droma Epics, Sadow led the Sith during the Great Hyperspace War but was defeated because of numerous betrayals. The Massassi of Yavin 4 allegedly built the Great Temple in his honor, despite his treating them badly.

Exar Kun

The visual dictionary for Solo: A Star Wars Story canonized Exar Kun by saying that the obsidian stone at the base of Dryden Vos' desk was stolen from the Sith temple of Exar Kun. He was also name-dropped in a supplement to the Star Wars role-playing games made by Fantasy Flight. Details about him are slim in canon, but in Legends, Kun was a Jedi-turned-Sith who was responsible for the Great Sith War. After leaving the Jedi Order, Kun met with numerous Sith spirits including Freedon Nadd and Marka Ragnos. With his apprentice Ulic Qel-Droma, Kun attacked Coruscant with a force of Sith, Mandalorian and Krath Cult warriors. They killed the supreme chancellor before Qel-Droma betrayed and defeated Kun. However, his spirit survived on Yavin 4 for centuries. Exar Kun also invented the double-bladed lightsaber.
