WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If...? Season 1, Episode 5, "What If... Zombies?!," streaming now on Disney+.

In terms of body count, "What If… Zombies?!" is only second to the universal eradication caused in the previous episode. Numerous beloved characters are ripped to shreds or wiped out over the course of the episode, with many either killed at best, or corrupted into the undead at worst, due to the virus unleashed by Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne.

But there might still be hope in this reality, as there are a number of heroes still standing -- or at least implied to have not been caught in the same wave of death as the rest of the Avengers. Here are all the heroes who could appear if this universe is revisited.

The MCU Heroes Who Survived

What If Zombie Survivors 1

The plot of "What If… Zombies?!" is focused on the handful of heroes who survive the initial outbreak of the zombie plague. Spider-Man, Wasp, Bruce Banner, Bucky Barnes, Okoye, Sharon Carter, Happy Hogan, the Cloak of Levitation and Scott Lang's criminal partner Kurt are the primary group of survivors. However, their attempts to reach Camp Lehigh result in the demise of Happy, Sharon and the infection of Wasp -- who dies bringing the rest of the team to the camp.

Although they find the severed (but cured) head of Scott Lang and Black Panther, most of the group is seemingly killed when Vision's natural effect on the undead ceases with his death. The only ones who escape are Spider-Man, Black Panther, Lang and the Cloak -- flying to an uncertain future in the zombie-overrun Wakanda. But at least at the close of the episode, these three are still alive and capable of fighting back -- and with a Quinjet at their disposal, they can relocate and ally with other survivors.

Which MCU Heroes Are Missing in Action?

What If Zombie Survivors 2

While some members of the survivors are killed and turned into the undead over the course of the episode, others are merely taken down off-screen and therefore could presumably be shown to survive in future appearances of this universe. That includes Okoye (who is most likely killed when Vision collapses a building atop her and the zombified Wanda), Bucky (who may have survived the distance Wanda threw him thanks to holding Captain America's shield) and the Hulk (whose super-strong skin was tough enough to avoid being infected, but was last seen fighting the Scarlet Witch).

There are other Earth-bound heroes who may yet turn out to have survived the initial onslaught of the undead. James Rhodes and Pepper Potts likely still have access to their War Machine and Rescue armors respectively, while the fall of Wakanda doesn't ensure that Shuri or M'Baku were killed. Figures like Nick Fury and Maria Hill could have gone underground. There's also the question of Phase 4 heroes who were not involved in the world during the time of the zombie outbreak -- leaving the possibility that figures like Shang-Chi or the Eternals could still be out there.

What Happens With Thanos and the Cosmic Heroes?

What If Zombie Survivors 3

Given the circumstances of the Avengers: Infinity War seemingly playing out around the events of the zombie plague, it's unlikely that events like the Battle of Titan -- which would have required Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Spider-Man to be space-bound -- played out exactly the same as they did in the Sacred Timeline. Given the shot of the zombie Thanos with five of the Infinity Stones, it's highly likely that Gamora was still sacrificed to grant him the Soul Stone.

But the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy (as well as the recently found Thor) could still very much be alive and capable of coming to Earth. Thor, Rocket and Groot likely still ensured that the God of Thunder got his hands on Stormbreaker. They, along with the surviving Asgardians led by Valkyrie, could become the primary force to come to Earth and contend with the undead menace. They could even find Captain Marvel, whose power might be enough to really stop the spread of the horde -- even if Zombie Thanos gets his hands on the Mind Stone.
