WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If...? Season 1, Episode 9, "What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?," streaming now on Disney+.

Since Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its projects have been paying homage to the Star Wars franchise in clever ways, whether it be almost every Phase Two film featuring a character losing an arm or hand or Peter Parker making references to Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. That being said, What If...? has spent an entire season doing the same thing but in a matter of weeks instead of years. Not only has it been fun and exciting to see, but it also confirms that the show and franchise as a whole have an undying love for that galaxy far, far away.

The earliest reference comes in What If...?'s second episode when the Watcher shows a universe where T'Challa becomes Star-Lord. While searching the Collector's hangar, many ships from the MCU are shown, including a shape that looks extremely similar to an X-Wing from Star Wars. It hasn't been confirmed, but it's worth noting, as no other ships have a similarly iconic design in Marvel.

In Episode 8, "What If... Ultron Won?" Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff are the sole survivors in a world where Ultron has destroyed all life. While searching for ways to stop him, they look through the archives of an abandoned Russian facility. When they can't find anything, Clint comments, "the Death Star plans are not in the main computer," which is from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In addition, like Luke and Anakin, Clint is missing his arm and had it replaced with a robotic one. At the moment, the parallels are subtle, but it becomes amusing to find as many callbacks as possible when looked at altogether.

Infinite Ultron is incredulous that the Guardians of the Multiverse wont die

In the same episode, an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron finds and attacks the Watcher through the multiverse. As he is punched through multiple realities, one of the ones shown looks wildly similar to the planet Mustafar. To add credence to the connection, an outline of Darth Vader's Bast Castle can be seen in the background. For now, this location hasn't been made official yet, but like the X-Wing, it's hard not to see the resemblance.

What If...?'s season finale contains one final callback that pulls a line directly from The Empire Strikes Back as the Guardians of the Multiverse are facing off against Ultron. After their first attack fails, Ultron destroys the mountain they're on. Thinking he's killed them, he utters, "All too easy." The line is pulled from the battle between Luke and Darth Vader on Bespin when the Sith Lord believes he's trapped Luke in the carbonite chamber. Much like the film, the heroes prove that they're much harder to defeat than the villain thinks.

There's no doubt that the minds behind What If...? have a strong love for Star Wars, and it shows in the series' many Easter eggs. Plus, with both properties under the Disney umbrella, it makes crossovers between the two even more possible. But with one season completed, the only question that remains is if the Star Wars Easter eggs will continue in the second season.

To see another reference to a galaxy far, far away, Season 1 of What If...? is streaming now on Disney+.
