The following contains spoilers for What If...? Miles Morales #4, now on sale from Marvel Comics

The What If...?: Miles Morales miniseries focuses on universes where Miles Morales is imbued with different sets of superpowers than his typical abilities. This has largely been heroic in nature, with some realities introducing variants of Starling and Ganke who'd become heroes like Falcon or Professor Xavier.

But in What If...?: Miles Morales #4 (by Yehudi Mercado, Luigi Zagaria, Chris Sotomayor, and VC's Cory Petitthe), Miles is Thor in an Asgardian version of Brooklyn. The Odin in this universe is somewhat similar to Miles' father, Jefferson Davis, and he is one of the most heartless All-Fathers Marvel has introduced in quite some time.

What If Miles Morales Thor Odin Loki 1

What If...? Miles Morales #4 paints a timeline where the World Tree is spread on Earth instead of Asgard. This resulted in an Earth-based version of Asgardians, and a Miles Morales version of Thor Odinson serving as the God of Thunder. In many ways, this reality resembles Asgard more than Earth, with the biggest tweaks being Spider-Man's old haunts in Brooklyn and the amalgamations of various characters from the mystical realm (Starling morphed with Sif and Ganke Lee combined with Volstagg).

Odin and Loki are recast as siblings. Loki tricked his beloved nephew, Thor, into unleashing Laufey, the King of the Frost Giants, and prompted him to fight Thor. Odin is unmoved by the combat and simply watches as Laufey faces off with Thor. Despite Loki's shock, Odin continues to sit back and watch the battle, undisturbed by the possible death of his son. When Loki confronts him, he simply explains that Thor failed him by trusting the God of Mischief and that if he can't even defeat Laufey, then he's not worthy to be his heir. But even after proving himself and beating the Frost Giant, Odin remains infuriated with his son for his mistake.

What If Miles Morales Thor Odin Loki 2

This is a harsh version of Odin compared to other variants of the character. Although this variant is an amalgamation of Jefferson Davis and Odin, this version lacks the patience Jefferson had for his son and the concealed love for Thor that Odin possessed. Instead, this variant is content to simply watch and see if his son is truly worthy not just of his throne, but of his life.

As hard as Odin was on Thor, it was always clear that he loved his son. His genuine emotions for Thor even led him to sacrifice his life to save him. Jefferson likewise has high expectations for his son but has usually been portrayed as an empathetic figure. This version of the All-Father took only the negative qualities of Jefferson and Odin and eliminated any possibility of a bond between father and son. Instead, this version of Odin is a cruel figure, and it shows.
