WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If...? Season 1, Episode 5, “What If… Zombies!?” streaming now on Disney+.

The latest episode of What If…? is a retelling of Avengers: Infinity War that features elements from a well-known comic book run, Marvel Zombies, in the aptly titled “What If… Zombies!?” The fifth episode is just the latest horror-inflected take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, riding the coattails of last week's "What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?" which approached Doctor Strange from a cosmic horror angle.

In this episode, an interdimensional virus is brought to Earth after Hank Pym rescues his wife Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, which spreads across the Pacific Northwest and the Avengers, turning every person bitten into a zombie. In a key fight scene at the end of the episode, a zombified Wanda Maximoff and Hulk battle each other, showcasing two of the most powerful beings in the MCU as opponents.

“What If… Zombies!?” follows a ragtag group of survivors as they try to withstand the growing zombie population in the United States. Since the Avengers have been infected, it is ultimately up to the remaining heroes to try and find a cure or battle the zombies. Around the same time as Bruce Banner falls to Earth (in a scene exactly like the one from Infinity War), the group of survivors receives a transmission from Camp Lehigh that implies a cure is possible. The transmission, though, turns out to be a trap. Vision, who had been able to resist the zombies because of his synthezoid skin, sent out many transmissions like this to groups of survivors to entreat them to come to Camp Lehigh so he could feed them to his “zombie bride” Wanda. Sadly, her strong powers prevented her from being cured by the Mind Stone. He confesses that he was unable to kill her out of love.

This is where the Wanda-Hulk fight comes into play. Vision decides to give up his Mind Stone so that the survivors can take it to Wakanda, where the zombies have not been able to enter and where they can transmit the frequency of the Mind Stone to the whole world, thus curing them. However, Wanda’s powers are still remarkably strong when she’s a zombie; she can still fly/levitate and use her magic. Even Vision’s admission that he cannot cure her with the Mind Stone as he had with Scott Lang is an indication that she is still one of, if not the strongest Avenger in the MCU.

What If Zombie Survivors 2

So to distract Wanda, Bruce decides to bring out the Hulk and fight her so that the quadjet can fly off without any interference from her powers. It is well-established in the MCU that when Bruce transforms into the Hulk, he can withstand almost any force. His codename on the quinjet in Thor: Ragnarok is even “Strongest Avenger,” an in-universe reference to his brute strength and durability. At first, Bruce punches Wanda away when she bites him, but his arm Hulks out and he manages to resist getting infected. This single punch throws her all the way across the airfield and into a group of zombies.

After some coaxing, Bruce finally Hulks out and he and Wanda rush each other on the airfield to fight. Viewers only get to see them exchange a few punches, but between Hulk’s huge fists and Wanda’s magical orbs, they match each other blow for blow each time. Bruce likely knows that they are evenly matched in terms of physical abilities, so he knows that fighting her directly won’t end in defeat, it will just be enough of a distraction for the cure to safely leave Camp Lehigh.

The newest episode of What If…? proves that even as a zombie, Wanda Maximoff just can’t quit. She showcases much of her powers in the episode, even fighting back against a Hulked-out Bruce Banner and still managing to hold her own. This matchup between two of the MCU’s heavyweights doesn’t answer the question of which is the stronger Avenger since audiences don’t see the end of the fight -- unless the body that hit the quadjet as it flew off was zombie Wanda’s -- but it does prove that both Wanda and the Hulk have immense physical strength.

See who lives, who dies and who gets zombified in this week’s episode of What If…?, now streaming on Disney+ along with the first four episodes.
