While Peggy Carter taking the Super Soldier Serum or Killmonger running Wakanda seem like obvious choices for What If...? stories, T'Challa taking the mantle of Star-Lord instead of Black Panther is an odder option.

At a press conference attended by CBR, head writer A.C. Bradley spoke about how the seemingly random idea of T'Challa becoming Star-Lord in place of Peter Quill came about.

"When it came to actually figuring out the T'Challa episode, obviously, this was over two years ago. So Chadwick was still with us. The way that one actually came about was by looking -- we had in the writers' room, we had a poster that had all the characters on it. And we realized that T'Challa and Peter Quill are the same age, or very close to it," Bradley said. "So spoiler, I think, Yondu takes the wrong kid -- what other 9-year-olds are running around the MCU around about the same time. And it was like, he gets a little bit lost, they end up in Wakanda. You know, all humans look alike. So, that's kind of where that one started from."

"And then the question became, again, trying to find the other side of the heroes," Bradley continued. "The whole point of the show is like, what else can we say. T'Challa is an interesting character because he's not a character that arcs himself. He's a character that changes the world around him. And he doesn't go through a transformation, he transforms the world. So then taking a step back would be, 'Well, how would T'Challa transform outer space?' And that's how you get that episode."

Of course, in the comics, T'Challa does join a team of Wakandans trying to transform outer space as part of Ta-Nehisi Coates' long run on Black Panther. While the What If...? episode looks to be telling a very different tale, it might be the closest fans get to Black Panther in space.

The story of Captain Carter will unfold over several seasons of What If...? but T'Challa's time as Star-Lord will be a single story. In fact, it will be the last time Boseman plays the role that made him famous following his passing. But according to the creators of the series, the actor was deeply excited about the role.
