The upcoming ninth episode of What If...? is the Season 1 finale. However, Season 1 not only saw its episode count scaled back but also the length of its episodes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "What If...? comics ended abruptly and really dark to prove that the main timeline is the better timeline," head writer A.C. Bradley said. "We’ve used that as our reason to cut stories off a little bit shorter. All these episodes could have been 45 minutes. Some of the animatics were 35 minutes, but due to animation and Covid, we cut them a little bit shorter than we would have liked."

Last week's episode saw Ultron claim Vision's body, defeat the Avengers and assemble all six Infinity Stones after murdering Thanos. This led to a battle with The Watcher, who sought the help of Doctor Strange Supreme while Ultron claimed The Watcher's observatory as his own. This seemingly set the stage for a final showdown between Ultron and The Watcher, the latter of whom will presumably be aided by the heroes from across the multiverse.

"As we battle toward the finale, we will see some of our heroes again," Bradley recently explained. "And the Watcher learns a few important lessons about what it means to be a hero and comes to a realization about how much these stories, how much these worlds mean to him."

"He starts off very distant and literally watching from afar, but for so many of us, Marvel movies have become more than just entertainment," she continued. "Marvel movies have become more and more of a cultural touchstone and a bigger part of our lexicon, so the notion that, for the Watcher, as he peruses these multiverses, as he lives through these heroes, as he suffers their triumphs and their tragedies, he becomes also more emotionally invested, and therefore becomes more and more part of their world and wants to be more part of their world even though he knows he's not supposed to."

The Season 1 finale of What If...? premieres Wednesday, Oct. 6 on Disney+.
