What If...? director/executive producer Bryan Andrews says he was excited to finally bring "Kirby Krackle" -- a stylistic device innovated by legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby -- into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I just wanted to do it forever," Andrews said in an interview with ComicBook.com. "And then I've always been bummed that they haven't done Kirby Krackle on the live-action movies, so I was like, 'We're doing it here, guys,' and everyone was like, 'Yay!'"

On that note, Andrews hopes that What If...?'s use of Kirby Krackle will inform the visual look of future live-action projects. "I think, now that we've done it and it looks amazing, I'm hoping that whatever weird thing that the visual effects people have been avoiding it for [is over] -- I don't know why they would," he said. "Come on guys. Bring it, bring it! So we'll see. Maybe it's a new era of visual effects."

For the uninitiated, Kirby Krackle -- also known as "Kirby Dots" -- refers to when a a field of black is used to represent negative space around various types of energy, such as explosions, smoke, ray gun blasts and cosmic phenomena. What If...? utilizes Kirby Krackle as part of the fighting styles of both Ultron (voiced by Ross Marquand) and series narrator Uatu the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright).

Kirby Krackle as we know it today was first seen in Kirby's mid-1960s work on Fantastic Four and Thor, though the origins of the artistic device can actually be traced all the way back to Kirby and Joe Simon's work on Blue Bolt in the early 1940s. Kirby Krackle was present in much of Kirby's work for both Marvel and DC Comics, and was even incorporated into the design of the Avengers Campus portion of Disney's California Adventure park. Kirby Krackle was even used in the Cartoon Network animated series Ben 10, created by Man of Action (Big Hero 6The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes).

Based on the Marvel Comics title of the same name, What If...? is Marvel Studios' first official animated series. The show offers a look into various alternate realities, showing what things would have been like had certain events in the MCU played out differently. What If...?'s nine-episode first season premiered on Aug. 11 and concluded just a few days ago on Oct. 6. A second season is currently in the works. Of course, the late, great Jack Kirby is responsible for co-creating many of the Marvel characters prominently featured in the show, including Peggy Carter, T'Challa, Nick Fury, Thor and, of course, The Watcher, among many others.
