While the early episodes of What If...? seemed disconnected from each other save for the presence of The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), "What If... Thor Were an Only Child?" kicked off a storyline in which Ultron -- who took possession of both Vision's body and the Infinity Stones -- set out to conquer the multiverse. Now, head writer A.C. Bradley has confirmed protagonists from previous episodes will indeed return in the finale.

"We will pop into and re-meet some of our heroes from the previous episodes, including the lovely Captain Carter [Hayley Atwell], Strange Supreme, Party Thor [Chris Hemsworth], and even Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan]," Bradley told EW.

"Early on in the first season," Bradley continued, "like day one talking about it, there was this notion of we're creating all these great heroes, but we only get to sit with them for 20 or 30 minutes. Wouldn't it be great to see them again in the finale? And then once that decision was made, it liberated me to make the endings a little bit darker and bigger, knowing that we can give some sort of resolution in the finale."

Premiering on Aug. 11, What If...? explores the alternate timelines that changes to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe films create. The main character of the series is, fundamentally, The Watcher, a powerful being sworn to never intervene in what he sees happening in the multiverse. However, the threat Ultron posed to the multiverse forced The Watcher to enlist the help of the powerful Strange Supreme, a version of Stephen Strange who lost Dr. Christine Palmer rather than his hands and used the power of the Dark Dimension to become both incredibly powerful and incredibly evil.

Currently, there are plans for What If...? Season 2. While just when that outing might drop isn't clear at this time, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed earlier this year that the series would tackle various Phase Four films, meaning the Disney+ series may put a spin on such movies as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Eternals. For her part, Captain Carter's story is also said to unfold over multiple seasons, so she will certainly return after the Season 1 finale.

The What If...? Season 1 finale, "What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?" airs Oct. 6 on Disney+.
