What If: Marvel Studios' First Animated Series Reveals The MCU's Watcher

During its Hall H presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Marvel Studios officially announced What If...? -- its first animated series, which is scheduled to hit the Disney+ streaming service in the summer of 2021.

What If...? stars Westworld's Jeffrey Wright as the voice of The Watcher. Additionally, Marvel explains that "many" Marvel Cinematic Universe stars will reprise their roles as voice talent in the upcoming animated series.

The show is evidently based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. The episodic What If...? comic book offers readers a look at what the Marvel universe may have looked like had certain key moments in its history played out differently.

Marvel Comics' What If...? is narrated by Uatu the Watcher (or simply The Watcher). The Watchers are an ancient race of Marvel aliens whose purpose is to observe the universe and preserve its knowledge, without interfering. Uatu was the first Watcher to be introduced by Marvel, debuting in 1963 on the pages of Fantastic Four. The Watchers were established as being a part of the MCU in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

Marvel Studios' What If...? will take a similar approach. With Wright's Watcher as a curator of sorts, the animated series will show viewers the direction the MCU's world may have taken had the scales of fate been tipped. For instance, studio president Kevin Feige previously revealed that the series would look to kick things off by showcasing a world were Peggy Carter -- not Steve Rogers -- was given the Captain America super soldier serum.
