What Do You Think of Marvel's Blackest Night Returns Program?

In case you haven't heard already, Marvel is doing a special program (done on their own, Diamond Comics is not involved in the deal) where retailers can return 50 covers of unsold copies of certain DC comic books in return for a special variant cover for Siege #3.

The books are:

Adventure Comics #4Booster Gold #26Doom Patrol #4Justice League Of America #39Outsiders #24R.E.B.E.L.S #10

which are all books that retailers had to order a certain amount of to order bags of promotional rings tied into the Blackest Night crossover.

All those books saw significant sales boosts at the retail level, and I suppose this is a bit of a test to see if those sales translated past stores ordering the books and into customers actually buying them.

So what do you think? Clever dig at a competitor? Petty dig at a competitor? Funny? Mean? Funny AND mean? A test to see how well the program worked in case they want to try something similar themselves?
